Details: 775-829-9010
About the event: Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) is offering "Indian Cooking" class, which will be held at Billinghurst Middle School (6685 Chesterfield Lane, Reno), starting February 17.One of the most popular cuisines across the globe, Indian cuisine goes back to around 7,000 BCE when sesame and eggplant were domesticated in Indus Valley. By around 3,000 BCE, black pepper, mustard, turmeric, and cardamom were being harvested in India. Many of the staple items in cooking of India date from pre-historic times and certain preparations have virtually remained unchanged to this day. Ancient Hindu scripture Chandogya Upanishad says: "Through food comes the end of all ignorance and bondage." In ancient Sanskrit textbooks, cookery appears to have been a highly cultivated art. Even Byzantine Emperor Justinian employed an Indian chef in his palace. To be taught by daughter-mother team of Palkin Zed and Shipa Zed, this class will provide a hands-on glimpse into the cuisine of India wh ich is characterized by sophisticated and subtle use of various spices and herbs and had a remarkable influence on cuisines across the world. Over 1,200 Indian food products have reportedly been introduced in USA since 2000. Curry originated in India. All are welcome to sign-up for "Indian Cooking" class (FB124C), to be held from six to eight pm on four consecutive Wednesdays from February 17 to March 10, 2010, costing $89 with discount for seniors. TAHOE BIG BLUE ADVENTURE RACE
September 18, 2010
Lake Tahoe
Details: 530-564-1019
Defined by both the incredible beauty of Lake Tahoe and the towering peaks of the High Sierra, Lake Tahoe is one of the world’s most famous sporting playgrounds. The region has an almost endless variety of spectacular mountain biking trails, adventurous hikes and, of course, waterborne activities on the “Big Blue” - Lake Tahoe - one of the largest, deepest and purest alpine lakes on earth. The Tahoe Big Blue Adventure Race is a celebration of the natural environment of the North Shore, and the perfect climate of “Indian Summer.” September is a favorite month of Tahoe locals... and no wonder: day-time temperatures are in the 80’s with the evenings cooling into the 60’s, the skies are deep blue with only an occasional afternoon thunderstorm rolling through (to help keep the dust down on the trails!) and, best of all, the bustle of the summer tourist season is a distant speck in the rear-view mirror. This is a perfect time for a visit to the Big Blue.
